Halloween Spell Book {part 3}

L.O.V.E. how this book turned out for so many reasons!  Mainly because I was trying to use supplies I already had and didn't know exactly where I was going with it.  Now I have another Halloween prop to contribute to the Halloween Party!

Supplies you'll need:

Thrift Store Book * Brown Paper Bag * Mod Podge

What to do:

Add character to your book spine by adding layers of hot glue

  • Crinkle up the brown paper bag and tear it into pieces
  • Using Mod Podge, cover the book with the crinkled paper bag
  • Glue the front side of the magazine eye (or the flat side of the marble)
  • Attach the front side of the glued image to the flat side of the marble
  • Glue the marble eyes to the front of your book
  • Surround the marble eyes with crinkled brown paper bag to give them a more finished look
  • To create the bloody tears, drip layers of hot glue (blow on them to cool in between layers)
  • Paint the dried {hot} glue with red paint

Flower Pens

What you'll need:
  • Plastic Pens
  • Green floral tape
  • Artificial flowers

What to do:
Start taping at the flower end of the pen.  Guide the tape while winding the pen in a circular motion.  The tape should cover the entire pen down to the tip in one long vertical strip.  Secure the tape by pressing it gently down with your fingers.

**for the feather and pin wheel pens I used white floral tape

Paint Chip Art

Paint Chip Coasters

What you'll need:
  • Inexpensive bathroom tile - I found mine at Home Depot for 14 cents a piece!
  •  Paint chips in all colors
  • Disposable restaurant coasters to be used as a template
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush (I had to throw 2 coasters away because brush bristles dried under the glue.  Next time I would use foam brushes)
  • Clear gloss sealer
  • Protective felt pads for the underside of your coasters

What to do:

  • Place coaster template on top of desired paint chip color - trace around and cut out
  • Brush Mod Podge paste on the back side of your paint chip cut out
  • Center paint chip cut out on top of bathroom tile (I had problems here with air bubbles.  Make sure you take your time to make sure everything is glued evenly with out air bubbles)
  • Brush a thin coat of Mod Podge on top of the paint chip/tile combo - apply several coats (let dry in between coats)
  • Finish off with clear gloss sealer
  • Place protective felt pads on the underside of the tile as to not scratch your surface

 Framed Paint Chip Art

Frames: Purchased at the Dollar Store for $1 each
Left: This was just cut to fit the frame from a paint chip brochure - I based my colors on this page
Center: This mosaic pattern was created by cutting thin strips using the blue/gray color scheme
Right: This was created by simply framing a horizontal style paint chip

Paint Chip Bookmarks:  These were created by cutting out a vertical bookmark shape - punch a hole in the top center using a hole punch and stringing and knotting coordinating yarn through the hole.

    De-cou-page [dey-koo-pahzh]

The art or technique of decorating something with cut-outs of paper, linoleum, plastic or other flat material over which varnish or lacquer is applied

Exhibit A - aluminum soup can

Brush a coat of Mod Podge along the exterior of the aluminum can

Wrap your pre-cut scrapbook paper around the aluminum can - work slow being aware of air bubbles
Once scrapbook paper is smoothly wrapped around the can, cover with decoupage - several layers
    (let dry in-between coats)

    Tray - Before

I thought it was a cool idea to turn the trays into picture frames (this was a very short lived idea)

Tray - After (used scrapbook paper and decoupage)

Using the tray to hold stationary goods

I had been hoarding movie and concert ticket stubs since High School - I finally found a functional home for them!

I made this sign for my sister's hair station
     What you'll need:
    • Small/Med sized canvas (I purchased this one at SAVERS - I painted over the existing art with several coats of cream colored acrylic paint.
    • The gold and white on either end of the canvas are pieces of patterned tissue paper
    • The scissors are cut from magazine advertisements
    • The name is spelled out using wood letter pieces (scrabble pieces would work)
    • Glue all items onto the canvas with decoupage
    • Cover entire piece with several layers of decoupage (let dry in-between coats)

Another piece for my Sister's work station
Same concept as the Jaime Meyers canvas - hair scissors were cut from a magazine advertisement & lady and letters were cut from a pin up calendar.
